The time is fast coming when we have to acknowledge that the march of fascism long warned about is well underway.
It can be seen raising its ugly head in various countries worldwide.
Some of them being the last place that one would expect.
If nothing else the horrifying events in Palestine and the extreme disparity of reaction to them has swept aside the mask that has hitherto concealed the true nature of governments that have,up until now,loudly trumpeted their dedication to justice and human rights. Well, the camouflage has gone and we see them now.
Good column. I am reminded that when I took an advanced English class at Cornell, in 1960, we were required to read and write about, the Salem witchcraft trials. I had no idea at the time why it was required reading. But now I understand.
There are forums where just talking about this topic can get you banned.
In my own writing and activities, I have avoided weighing in on the topic, believing that even among my most intelligent friends, few of them are able to calmly discuss the Israel/Palestine issues, or use any objectivity on the topic. There seem to be elements to the story that are far worse and more polarizing, even, than the "troubles" experienced in the Irish Catholics vs. British army situation decades ago, or apartheid in South Africa, or the British occupation of India, or European settlers vs. native American indigenous people, and so forth and so on,
Witch hunts have been used to oppress and destroy people for centuries. Whether it’s for religious purposes, genocide, political power or plain and simple tyranny, the reasons remain the same, autocracy, authoritarianism and abuse of absolute power.
